Alan Hutton has claimed Tottenham Hotspur could make a mistake by letting Steven Bergwijn leave the club in January.

Bergwijn hasn’t started a single game in the first month and a half of Antonio Conte’s reign at Spurs and he was reported at the time that the Spurs head coach’s relationship with the Dutchman was strained and the wide man was due to leave in January.

However, the 24-year-old started in the Tottenham League Cup quarter-final against West Ham last week and the winger certainly seized his opportunity, securing a goal and an assist in the 2 win. -1.

Tale rented Bergiwjn’s display against the Hammers, but that performance did not end speculation linking the wide man to an estrangement from the North London club.

Fabrizio Romano said Skrill this week that former PSV Eindhoven player could be one of the players to leave Spurs during the January window.

Hutton believes Bergwijn still has a lot to offer Spurs and that he could be an asset to the team.

The former Tottenham right-back said Football initiate concerning the winger: “I would like to see him stay.

“I watched the West Ham game and thought he was playing very well. Conte said he was back to Harry Kane. I don’t see him as an attacker.

“I see it as one of those other two forward-thinking possessions. He could play both sides.

“If he can get a series of games, keep his fitness level high, work hard in training, I don’t see why they would want to drop such an asset.

“That’s unless Antonio Conte really doesn’t see him fit in for some reason. We don’t know what’s going on on a daily basis.

“I know he likes his players working 110% every day. Whether he does it or not, we just don’t know.

“But I think that in his time he is an excellent player who can give you a lot for the future. That’s why I would like to keep him in the team.

Spurs web opinion

Even though Tottenham sign another striker / winger this month, I don’t expect the club to take advantage of Bergwijn. Conte will likely want to keep the Dutchman as a squad option, given the club’s crowded fixture list over the next two months.
