Covid-19 update: Covid-19 cases in India declined throughout February 2022 after experiencing an accelerated increase in mid-January 2022. This was mainly due to large-scale vaccination undertaken by the Indian government.
High frequency indicators: Google’s mobility data showed a return to pre-pandemic levels as Covid-19 alerts dwindled. Mobility for retail and the workplace has gained momentum with declining case numbers and the easing of mobility restrictions during Covid 3.0.
Shares: Overall, February 22 turned out to be a very volatile month dominated by geopolitical risk. Additionally, a few other macro factors that continue to weigh on investor sentiment are 1. growing inflation concerns, 2. expectations of aggressive rate hikes, 3. rising bond yields, and 4. rising crude price.
Fixed Income: Driven by political support, the slope of the yield curve has flattened since October 21, unlike the steep curve seen in previous months.
Gold – Gold became the best performing asset class in the first two months of 2022.
Change: The Indian currency remained volatile in Feb-22.
